Hello Everyone, Fishing in my area has recently gone ballistic! There has been a massive influx of nice sized baitfish that has attracted a plethora of hungry predators. This is absolutely one of my favorite times to fish! Nearly every species is available and plentiful at that, bait is everywhere, the weather is gorgeous, and the fish are aggressive all day due to a cooler water temps. On the top of the list this month is kingfish, kingfish, and kingfish. These large, speedy, offshore pelagics  come close to shore and even inside of the bay following the fall bait run south. Typical size is 10-20lbs but a 40-50lb “smoker king” is always a possibility. These fish sometimes fly over 20ft out of the water when they “skyrocket” on a surface bait and make incredibly fast, long runs that can literally make a reel smoke, hence the nick name. They will be around until the bait leaves in late fall. In amongst them, we find droves of large spanish mackerel, bluefish, bonito, blacktip sharks, tarpon, large jacks, “bull” redfish, cobia, and who knows what else you might see. The constant action and large size of the fish present in our waters right now makes this a prime to hit the water. In on the flats, Redfish are schooling up around grassflats and oyster bars all over my area. Larger trout are also becoming active in some of the same areas with the cooler water temps so getting a load of tasty trout fillets is no problem even during the toughest of conditions, especially with the recently implemented year round open season. Larger flounder have also started to show due to the cooler water temps and can be caught fishing off channel edges and deeper potholes near the bottom. Inshore grouper fishing should be off the charts for the next couple months as these aggressive, hard hard fighting fish come in from offshore. Nearly any deeper structure in the bay should hold fish that can be caught with live bait or large diving plugs. Bonus cobia are always a possibility when fishing bait around deeper structure too. Just dont forget about the new nov 15 closure on grouper if you want some fillets. All in all fishing over the next month or two should be great!
